Lumbar Sympathetic Nerve Block

A lumbar sympathetic nerve block is an injection of local anesthetic in the back in the area of the sympathetic nerves. These nerves control the pain and blood flow in the legs. This procedure is performed to relieve pain from Raynaud’s phenomenon, trench foot, urogenital pain, “phantom” stump pain, post surgical leg pain, post injury pain and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Although uncommon, risks may include bleeding, infection, spinal or epidural blocks, or nerve damage.
